About Us Owned by Rachel and Tate Elsensohn, Mardi Gras Decorators was started in 2006 after the Elsensohn's acquired Massett and Co., Inc., from Mr. Louis Massett, a 30-year veteran of the New Orleans carnival and entertainment industry. Rachel began her affiliation with Massett and Co., Inc., in 1989. Following Hurricane Katrina, the Elsensohns returned to New Orleans determined that Mardi Gras would continue as scheduled. Despite facing tough obstacles, Rachel, Tate, and Mr. Massett worked effortlessly to prepare for Carnival 2006. They did this without electricity or plumbing, and with a skeletal crew of artists. It may have been desperate inspiration, or maybe it was a subconscious desire to return some measure of normalcy to a city devastated by nature. Either way, the 2006 Mardi Gras Season reflected some of their best work to date. After the 2006 Mardi Gras Season, Mr. Massett retired and sold the business to Rachel and Tate. In August 2006, Mardi Gras Decorators was born. To date, Rachel and Tate continue to thrive in the float building and decorating business and have expanded the business to include decorating and signage for area parks, businesses, casinos, movies, and special events.
